Carnival

Carnival is humanity’s oldest folk festival. Ηistorically, the tradition of carnival refers to the Dionysian feasts of the Greeks, where people used to dress up, dance and sing, drinking wine to honour God Dionysos.

The carnival officially starts on Fat Thursday with the revival of customs and traditions. The carnival has been celebrated throughout the island in the recent years, however, it is traditionally linked to Limassol and it is an integral part of the distinct identity of the town.

During the carnival period, several events are organised in Limassol where drinking, satire, dancing, singing and fancy dressing prevail. The events culminate with the big carnival parade with the participation of thousands of locals and foreigners in costumes.
