For the thirteenth consecutive year, the member states of the EuroMed Postal Union are issuing a stamp with a common theme. This year’s theme is “Mosaics of the Mediterranean”, which constitute valuable works of art and reveal the wealth, the history and the culture of the peoples in the region.

The Cyprus stamp is dedicated to the mosaic of Leda and the swan from Palaipaphos. This work of art is dated back to between the end of the 2^nd to the beginning of the 3^rd century AD, it is a magnificent example of the roman mosaic art, and it is kept today at the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia.

Leda is depicted with Zeus transformed into a swan, one of the most well-known scenes of the Greek mythology. Leda is portrayed naked, having the front part of her body covered and seems to be ‘playing’ with the swan, in a moment that heralds their romantic union.
