The “Europa” commemorative stamp collection celebrates 70 years since its first edition this year. Its story began on 15 September 1956, when it was first circulated by the six member-countries of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). From 1960 onwards its issue was taken over by the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations. While at the beginning all countries would use a common design, in 1974 a “common theme” was established so that each country would create its own artistic designs based on the specific theme. From 1993 to date PostEurop has taken over the management of the issues, widening the participation of Postal Services to more than 60. At the same time, from 2011 onwards an official logo was established which certifies the authenticity of the series.

The stamp of this year’s series is the artistic creation of the Finnish artist Klaus Welp. The design includes seven dots which are connected by a straight line, symbolising the seven decades of the European Post Offices’ united efforts, while the dotted line refers to the indentation of the stamps.

Amid a continually changing current reality, whereby political tensions and conflicts dominate, Europe stands firm and urges us to remain united in our common goals through philately.
