2026 marks the 200th anniversary of the Heroic Exodus of the Free Besieged, one of the highlights of the Greek Revolution of 1821. On the occasion of this important anniversary, the Cyprus Post honours the sacrifice of the fighters by issuing a special anniversary stamp, which reminds us of the historical memory and the timeless struggle for freedom.
The siege of the Iera Polis of Messolonghi lasted almost a year. From April 1825 until the night of April 10, 1826, when the defenders of the city, exhausted by hunger and hardship, decided to carry out the historic Exodus.
The Exodus is a timeless symbol of self-sacrifice, faith, and unwavering determination towards each conqueror. The people of Messolonghi preferred glorious death to tradition, giving world history a shocking example of heroism. The Exodus of Messolonghi reminds everyone that the struggles for dignity, freedom and ideals always remain relevant and inspire all people who claim the right to determine their future.
