24/03/2026

A ceremony was held today at the temporary Morphou Town Hall in Lefkosiato present the commemorative stamp marking 200 years since the heroic Exodus of Messolongi. Present at the event were the Mayor of the Sacred City of Messolongi, Spyros Diamantopoulos, along with a delegation from the municipality, as well as the Mayor of our beloved Keryneia Iosif Violaris.

The Mayor of Morphou, Viktor Hadjiavraam—whose proposal led to the issuance of the stamp—welcomed the guests, and in particular the delegation from the Municipality of Messolonghi, with which the Municipality of Morphou is twinned. On behalf of Cyprus Post, the Acting Director Pavlos Pavlides presented the stamp.

The commemorative stamp sheet depicts the central portion of the iconic painting by Theodoros Vryzakis, which is currently housed in the National Gallery of Greece – Alexandros Soutsos Museum. Artist Giorgos Papaioannou, who designed the stamp, drew inspiration from the dramatic historical moment when fighters and civilians attempted to escape through Ottoman military forces. He created a thoughtful artistic interpretation that symbolically conveys freedom, dignity, and collective strength, reminding us all that a people’s greatest values are born through sacrifice.

The event concluded with an exchange of commemorative gifts.
