The Cyprus Chairmanship of the Council of Europe

Design: Alexandros Neofytou, Lykeio Acropolis

The Republic of Cyprus became member of the Council of Europe (CoE) on May 24th 1961. It will take over, from November 22nd 2016 until May 19th 2017, the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, for the fifth time during its membership.

The CoE comprises 47 member States. All Council of Europe member states have signed up to the European Convention on Human Rights (1950), according to which High Contracting Parties are committed to ensuring human rights and fundamental freedoms to all persons under their jurisdiction. The European Convention on Human Rights is, still today, regarded as one of the most outstanding successes of international law.

The Cyprus Chairmanship is an ideal opportunity to strengthen the principles and values protected and promoted by this international organisation.
